What is this tool used for?

Use this preliminary sizing tool for a home operating without the electricity grid. It separates daily energy, simultaneous load, startup surge, battery autonomy and the solar energy needed to recharge the backup reserve.

How to use this calculator

Enter daily AC consumption, running and startup loads, the required surge duration, and worst-season design peak sun hours. Choose backup days and the number of sunny days allowed to restore the reserve while loads keep running. Enter battery voltage, DoD and separate conversion efficiencies. PV-side losses should exclude the inverter and battery losses already entered.

Understanding your results

Panels are rounded up to whole modules. Battery kWh and Ah describe nominal storage, not fully usable energy. Inverter kW, kVA and surge ratings are separate requirements. The controller figure is an output-current estimate only: verify cold string voltage, input current, MPPT range and manufacturer limits. A conservative all-energy-through-storage assumption is used; hourly weather simulation and equipment checks are still needed.

Arvutusmeetod

Daily DC load = daily AC kWh ÷ inverter efficiency + idle watts × 24 ÷ 1,000. Daily stored-energy withdrawal = DC load ÷ battery discharge efficiency. Battery nominal kWh = withdrawal × autonomy days ÷ usable DoD. PV bus energy = withdrawal ÷ charging efficiency × (1 + autonomy days ÷ recovery days). Array kWp = PV bus energy ÷ design sun hours ÷ retained PV fraction; panels round up. Inverter kW = simultaneous watts × headroom ÷ 1,000; kVA = kW ÷ power factor. Controller output-current estimate = installed array watts ÷ minimum battery voltage × 1.25.

Conservative energy model: all daily consumption is assumed to cycle through storage. PV losses exclude the separately entered inverter and battery losses. Autonomy starts with a fully charged battery; recharge assumes consecutive days at the entered design sun hours while daily loads continue. This is preliminary sizing, not guaranteed year-round off-grid supply. Check worst-season weather, ageing and temperature derating, battery/BMS discharge and charge limits, controller cold Voc/Isc and MPPT range, string layout and protection separately. Controller amps alone do not establish compatibility.
