What is this tool used for?

Use this tool to get a simple starting tilt and facing direction for a fixed solar array. It is helpful when exploring annual, summer or winter priorities.

How to use this calculator

Enter your latitude, using a negative value south of the equator, and select the season you want to prioritize. Latitude must be supplied by you; the tool does not detect your location.

Understanding your results

Tilt is measured from horizontal, while azimuth is measured clockwise from true north. The result is a latitude-based rule of thumb, not a site-specific optimum. Roof constraints, shade and the timing of electricity use may justify a different orientation.

Common questions

Do I need a solar time calculator or a panel tilt calculator?

A solar time calculator concerns the sun's position and timing, while this tool gives a fixed panel-tilt starting point from latitude. The NOAA solar calculator provides sunrise, sunset, solar noon and position calculations. NOAA currently says that service is no longer actively maintained, so review its limitations before relying on it.

Skaičiavimo metodas

Rule of thumb: annual tilt ≈ absolute latitude. Winter tilt ≈ latitude + 15°; summer tilt ≈ latitude − 15°, limited to 0–90°. Tilt is measured from horizontal; azimuth is measured clockwise from true north.

Prieš naudojant rezultatą

A heuristic, not a weather-based optimization. Roof geometry, shading, wind, soiling and time-of-use demand can favor another tilt or orientation. West-facing systems may shift output later in the day without maximizing annual energy.

Is true south the same as compass south?

Not always. Magnetic declination varies by location. Use true north/south for the azimuth reference.
