What is this tool used for?
Use this calculator when you know which appliances need backup and how long they must run, but do not yet know the battery capacity to buy.
How to use this calculator
Enter the average backup load, backup hours, nominal battery-bank voltage, usable depth of discharge and battery-to-AC efficiency. Use the manufacturer's permitted usable capacity rather than assuming the whole battery is available.
Understanding your results
Nominal kWh is the required stored energy rating before usability and conversion losses. Ah is the capacity at your selected bank voltage, so compare Ah figures only at the same voltage. Aging and temperature need additional allowance.

Ah is capacity at the stated bank voltage, not the sum of series-connected battery Ah ratings. Allow separately for age, temperature, peak discharge and recharge time.
Do batteries in series add amp-hours?
No. Series connections add voltage while Ah stays the same; parallel strings add Ah at the same voltage.
